Belated Blogging

Drumroll, please. Ta-da! I present some long-awaited photos from my trip to Cambrige, MA. The bitter cold and Dave’s fierce flu kept me from being too snap happy. Here are a few of the finest from a very tiny selection.

The Stata Center
Behold Mr. Gehry’s genius on a sunny day. This is the incredible Stata Centre at MIT. My dad, another fine architect, didn’t raise no fool! I love me some sexy structures.

Bending the rules
Here is the real glass ceiling in Gehry’s fine building. Of course, he’s chopped it all up. How subversive! Let’s assume from this fine ceiling that he’s not down with the metaphorical one. 😛

Structure
This is the MIT Media Lab atrium skylight and its embellishments. You’ll note that it none of that sunshine made its way into Dave’s office, which despite its location adjacent to the atrium, has no windows. Perhaps a lack of vitamin D allowed him to get sick.

Since I now have your attention, I want to tell you all about something that Dave, Tina and I witnessed at Algiers Coffee House in Harvard Square one cold evening in March. Our chatter over hot apple cider, mint tea and pecan pie a la mode was interrupted by a peppy little waitress who informed us that someone had called the café to cancel on her blind date. The server was both too thorough and not thorough enough for her search for the waiting, stood-up party as we, and those around us, were quite obviously not the ones waiting.

Eventually, the uncomfortable mystery was solved as a man trudged descended from the upper level of the café only to be asked loudly by you-can-guess, “Were you waiting for a blind date? A woman?”

“Yes…”

“She called to say that she couldn’t make it! Sorry! I had been looking for you all night.”

“Oh, okay. Thanks.”

Exit.

‘Twas as brutal as it reads, my friends. Poor chap.

eeeeehhhh! that’s so incredibly horrible what happened at algiers! and if i know the waitresses there, they’re pretty open, so there was no shame in announcing it. poor guy.

that’s a great photo of the stata center! when they were building it, i kept thinking, “hey, i think they put that bar up crooked?” but then it all came together when they finished!
