Musicology

I came, I saw, I kicked some ass.

Don’t laugh. You’ve got some guilty music pleasures too. And besides, mine involves the other star of Crossroads, Taryn Manning, and her brother! A sibling team that is way cooler than Hilary and Haylie could hope to be. (Let’s not talk about other scary sibling teams like those bobo Full House freaks or the Simpsonettes.)

Even though ‘The Wreckoning’ is an mp3 that was moved onto this computer from my old one (that has since been given to my 80-something grandmother), it is still one of my most frequently played tunes. On top of that, it is featured in one of my favourite BODYSTEP releases–#54. That one makes you feel the burn, baby.

Damn. I seriously miss the high energy of Les Mills classes. Still, the convenience and cash savings that come with working out at my mother’s gym (aka the local community fitness centre) made the switch worthwhile.

Anyway, the singing about ass-kicking? That was me trying to hype myself up after the interviews. I think they all went relatively well. I’m rarely nervous at interviews but I do often come out wishing I had said this, that and the other thing. Fate is going to step in. Results come in on Monday, February 20th. Nothing I can do till then.

I think that someone should tell me what today’s playlist has to say about me cuz I’d like to know. I am currently obsessed with The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. The song stands alone as a lovely, catchy, happy number; but I think I’ve got it set on repeat because there’s a Dave-like quality about it. Seriously, it reminds me so much of music my man makes. There are guitar parts that totally smack of Dave’s solo guitar tunes and other bits that make me think of his former band’s original compositions. *shrug*

You might understand when you go watch this video of Dave’s. The soundtrack is his own and exhibits some of his classic (not classical) guitar pickings . Can’t link you to any of The Nautical Mile’s old songs, but you can imagine him drumming along to something that is also good and fun, but with the occasional scream vocal. 😛

Reese recently mentioned that she was into another Clap Your Hands Say Yeah song. Maybe there’s something in the air. Then again, our air isn’t really the same since we’re so far apart. 🙂

I’ve also discovered (through those amazing Chinese dormitory boys lip syncing videos) that Liu Ruo Ying (Rene) did a Mandarin version of David Usher’s Black, Black Heart. Weird.

I’ve also been listening to the Hable Con Ella soundtrack. Maybe that’s because I had to answer a question in my deteriorating Spanish over the course of one of the interviews? Because I’ve been thinking about my time in Spain and my Spanish friends? Because I’ve been thinking about dance lately thanks to Lydia, Helen and my ritualistic poring over the newspaper’s arts/review sections? (Oh Pina Bausch and Cafe Muller!) Or because I’ve been thinking about love? Or just because I felt like it?

I’ve also just downloaded the full Amélie soundtrack.

Am I thinking about our dream to spend a few years abroad too much? Do I want to do graduate work in Paris? Do I only want to do it because it is in Paris? ARGH.

Maybe I just need to get to a show. After our study session, Michelle went to the symphony and I went home to watch television. My soul is starving.

Good gracious, I am so tired. I don’t think I can string together another (or any!) coherent sentence tonight. Tomorrow is a new day for studying, researching, recruiting speakers, exercising, living and loving, loving, loving.

This work…it will get done.

ooooh gratuitous linkage in adrienne’s blog! hehehehe….. I’m feeling very old fashioned in terms of my own personal musical soundtrack right now. This weekend I listened to an old cd of when I played in an all-state orchestra in high school. I still know every bit of those pieces by heart.

you seriously can’t deny the allure of a boy with musical skill. does this mean he’s also really tempermental too? i’ve noticed a lot of musical people i know are sort of tempermental. i know i am! hahaha… that’s a pretty cool little video dave made. where is it made? It could totally be one of those shorts IFC shows between movies…

Reesie, Fragment, Dave’s little short was filmed in Montreal. The “anonymous girl” is actually his sister! Ha! She does a good job in this role as she’s actually much more glamourous in real life! Heh. It helps that she’s a jill of all artistic trades. Classically trained ballerina who sings, dances, acts and does acrobatics too. Woot!

As you can probably tell from my spastic blog entries, I’m tempermental. Dave’s the chill one. We’re definitely the ying/yang couple. He’s the most easy going person out there. I mean, he’s very motivated and hard working, but definitely calm and steady.
